Mighty Oakes Update 6/6/12

Friends and family – good evening.  I don’t even know how to type this, but our son, Oakes Lee Ortyl, passed away in our arms and amidst our tears this evening.  He was very comfortable and passed very quickly.  We are confident that we did the right thing for Oakes and for us.  We have spent an incredibly brilliant, rewarding, unforgettable 16 months with Oakes and we know he has inspired literally thousands of people across the world, none more than his mama, papa and big sister.  I never, ever thought I would walk out of that hospital without him yet that’s exactly what we did tonight and it was the toughest thing we’ve ever had to do or ever will have to do.  There is so, so, so much more to write about the most painful, yet oddly magical 24 hours of our lives, but my incredible fortress of a wife and I are going to enjoy a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon on our porch tonight in his honor after the longest, hardest day of our collective lives.

We know that every single one of you love us, respect us and would do anything for us.  We also know that you can all respect that we need a couple of days to reflect on what has happened and where we go from here.  Once we figure out how to honor Oakes the right way, we will absolutely let you all know.  In the meantime, hug and kiss your children and tell your loved ones in heaven to watch out for the Mighty Oakes……

We love you all.

Greg, Becky, Isla P. & Mighty Oakes

  1. I am so heartbroken for your whole family and your loss. There are just no words. I can picture him with his big smile running throughout Heaven without having to stop and catch his breath. You are right in saying that little Oakes touched the lives of so many, many who don't even know him. His legacy will certainly live on in you and in Isla. My family will be praying for yours, for peace and healing. ~Tracy N.

  2. After stumbling upon your blog months ago, I have read every single one and anxiously waited for new ones. I told every one I could about your precious mighty Oakes and he was on many prayer boards and lists. I sit back here in Chicago shedding tears for your loss of Oakes. Even though I never met him, I will miss him. He has left an impression on me that will never go away. I will always remember Oakes and his inspirational fight and smile! Many prayers of comfort to all of you.

  7. I've also kept up with your blog and have felt so close to Oakes and your family. I have a 15 month old with a rare heart defect, so your story is very close to home for us. While our little guy is doing well, i know that nothing can be taken for granted and this is a reminder to appreciate each day we have with him. My heart is breaking for your family and the loss of your little angel. Please know that you're in my thoughts and prayers and I will miss seeing Oakes and his updates. Much love and many hugs to you all.
    Love, Cara
